What are the main risks of automated trading?
Most of what I’ve read about automated trading focuses on convenience, speed and reducing repetitive work, but I’m more interested in understanding the risks before trying anything. It seems possible that an automated strategy could continue following its rules even after market conditions have changed significantly. There could also be technical problems, incorrect assumptions in the strategy or issues with the data being used. I’m not looking for reasons to avoid automation completely; I just want to understand what can realistically go wrong and what precautions people normally consider. Are there particular areas that beginners tend to overlook?

There are several different types of risk, so it’s worth looking beyond ordinary market volatility. I came across some useful information about algorithmic trading that discusses the general mechanics behind these systems. Strategy risk is important because rules that worked under certain conditions may behave differently when the market changes. Technical failures, connectivity issues and incorrect configurations can also affect automated execution. Data quality matters as well because an algorithm can only work with the information it receives. I’d look for sensible risk controls, position limits and the ability to pause or stop a strategy. Security is another consideration if the system needs access to an exchange account. Automation can make execution easier, but it doesn’t remove the risks associated with the underlying trading activity.
